Biden was unable to overcome Trump’s nativist appeal or his huge fundraising advantage. He was also criticized for a weak performance in a nationally televised debate, repeating many falsehoods and failing to answer moderators’ questions. After the debate a drumbeat of calls for him to withdraw from the race grew louder.
Despite Harris’s popularity among young voters and her focus on traditional liberal causes, her campaign seemed to lack a detailed policy platform or strategy for winning in swing states. In addition, her campaign was slow to release detailed information about her background and financial records.

Other concerns included her lack of a clear plan for addressing climate change, her willingness to re-examine U.S. foreign policy, and her commitment to reducing the size of government. Nonetheless, in the end, a majority of Americans eligible to vote supported Harris over Trump.
